The Brief: A Cinema Experience That Belongs in the Gardens

On 3 October 2026, more than 1,000 people gathered on the Eco-Lake Lawn at Singapore Botanic Gardens for a free outdoor screening of The Last Whale Singer. The event was part of German Film Festival × KinoFest 2026, presented by Goethe-Institut Singapore with Filmhouse.

The brief was to create a shared cinema experience at scale while respecting one of Singapore’s most treasured green spaces. A conventional loudspeaker system would make dialogue less clear for people sitting further away and send amplified sound across the Gardens. Cinewav made the soundtrack personal instead: every guest listened in sync through their own phone and headphones.

Two Screens, One Shared Silent Cinema Experience

The event ran across two screens with a synchronized soundtrack. Guests could choose either screen and still hear audio aligned to the image in front of them. The Cinewav app also offered German and English audio choices, allowing people to select the language that worked for them without separating the audience into different screenings.

For the audience, the experience stayed clear and personal regardless of where they sat: front row or back row, screen one or screen two, German or English.

Building Communities Without Amplified Sound

Silent cinema does not mean solitary cinema. Families arrived early with picnic mats, friends settled in together on the lawn, and neighbours shared the same atmosphere, screens and story. The headphones protected the film’s audio quality while the open lawn preserved the social setting.

For community events, the outcome is more than reduced noise. Cinewav gives people a reason to gather, stay and enjoy a place together while ensuring every guest can hear the story clearly.

Placemaking With a Lighter Footprint

The event video notes that the whole setup was powered by just two batteries. With no amplified film soundtrack travelling across the Gardens, the screening avoided noise pollution in a sensitive outdoor setting while still delivering a full cinema experience to a crowd of more than 1,000 people.

This is placemaking through site-sensitive programming: a large public event can create energy and belonging without overwhelming the character of the venue. It opens new possibilities for parks, heritage sites, festival lawns and other sound-sensitive locations.

What Cinewav Delivered

Scale without amplified sound: more than 1,000 guests watched together without a loud film soundtrack across the lawn.

Two-screen flexibility: people could sit where they wanted and choose either screen.

Bilingual access: each viewer selected German or English audio in the app.

Consistent listening: synchronized audio stayed clear regardless of where a guest sat.

A social night out: picnics, families and friends remained at the centre of the experience.

Bring Silent Cinema to Your Next Event
